About Kamuela Vacation Rentals

Our Kamuela vacation rentals provide the perfect island retreat for a relaxing and luxurious Hawaii vacation in a region known for its ideal weather, gorgeous sunsets and breathtaking views.

Things To Do
Parker Ranch offers horseback riding adventures and ATV excursions that take in great views on the rolling ranchlands and then finish up at the Parker Ranch Store. The massive Parker Ranch is one of the nation's largest and covers thousands of Big Island acres. You can take a tour to learn more about the rich history of this ranch as well as the ranch founders' historic homes and extensive art collections. Tour nearby towns, each with its own charm, from Hawi and Kapaau north of Kamuela to the many small and historic towns along the scenic Hamakua Coast. A highlight of the Hamakua Coast is visiting the steep-walled Waipio Valley or viewing it from the lookout point. Along the Hamakua Coast make sure to check out the impressive Akaka Falls cascading 442 feet down the mountain. On the Kohala Coast and Kona Coast you will find a variety of activities from snorkeling, scuba diving, sport fishing and sunset sails to whale watching during the winter months.

Nearby Beaches
Fun day trips from Kamuela include touring the Kohala Coast where you will find some wonderful beaches with crystal clear water. Relax on the white sands of beautiful Hapuna Beach or go snorkeling or bodyboarding. The beach has restrooms, showers and picnic areas as well as food vendors. Anaehoomalu Bay is a nice spot for snorkeling and kayaking, and is also the site of an ancient Hawaiian fishpond. Mauna Kea Beach on Kaunaoa Bay is one of the island's prettiest beaches with shimmering blue water and bright white sand.

Restaurants
Kamuela town has a variety of restaurants as well as grocery stores where you can stock up on supplies. For a memorable meal in Kamuela try Merriman's Waimea where you can sample the culinary artistry of Peter Merriman, one of the founders of Hawaii Regional Cuisine. The restaurant emphasizes the use of fresh, Big Island grown ingredients such as crisp baby lettuce, sweet corn and vine-ripened tomatoes purchased daily from area farmers. Merriman's also serves up hormone-free beef and lamb as well as local goat cheese. A worthy signature dish is their Hawaiian pink snapper (opakapaka) with tropical apricot sauce! Visit Parker Square for more dining options. For some hearty sandwiches and salads as well as a great cup of Kona coffee try the Waimea Coffee Company.

Shopping
At Parker Square in Waimea town (Kamuela) you will find some interesting boutique shops, jewelry, art, Hawaiian collectibles, books, and whimsical gifts including chimes and beads at stores like Sweet Wind, Kamuela Goldsmiths, the Gallery of Great Things, and Waimea General Store. You will find various other shops around Kamuela (Waimea) town and also nearby Kapaau and Hawi as well as south at the Kohala Coast resort areas.

Getting Around
A rental car is recommended when staying in Kamuela vacation rentals so you can explore the region's many interesting sites and attractions including the beautiful beaches and posh resorts of the Kohala Coast, charming small towns and attractions along the Hamakua coast, and also day trips to the Kona Coast, Hilo town and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The island's bus service, called Hele On Bus, is free and stops at various points around the island including transportation between Kona and Hilo every day except Sunday.

Weather and Ocean Conditions
Kamuela enjoys exceptional weather that is slightly cooler than coastal towns. Average daily temperatures around 76 degrees F., perhaps a bit hotter in the summer and a bit cooler in the winter, with nighttime temperatures dropping about 10 degrees. This scenic region is known for its cool afternoon fogs rolling across the grassy hillsides. Overall the Big Island is known for its sunny weather which remains relatively stable all year around. The Kona and Kohala coastlines on the western shore are the warmest and driest while Hilo on the northeast shore receives more rain. Temperatures are cooler at higher elevations like Kona Coffee Country and atop Kilauea Volcano though these areas still can be quite warm during the days. Ocean conditions vary widely at Big Island beaches with many areas exposed to strong currents and potentially dangerous surf, particularly during the winter months. Numerous beaches provide good protection from the open ocean and provide safe areas for swimming and snorkeling. Visitors are urged to only visit lifeguarded beaches for water activities and heed all posted warnings. Check with lifeguards about the safest areas to participate in the activities you choose.
