Things To Do
Many activities await you in the Makena region from snorkeling, kayaking and sunning on the beach to hikes and other adventures. Golfers can enjoy the Makena Golf Course as well as The Wailea Golf Club which offers three spectacular courses called Blue, Emerald and Gold with great ocean views. They also have a pro shop and on-site restaurants. Just past Makena is Ahihi Kinau Natural Area Reserve which is a marine life conservation district with excellent snorkeling. The coral and lava rock coastline has plenty of shallow water for all skill levels revealing myriad fish and marine life including green sea turtles. Make sure not to step on the coral because it's alive and can be harmed if touched. A world-class snorkeling and scuba diving spot is located about three miles offshore at Molokini Crater, and during the winter months these are some of the best waters in all of Hawaii to see humpback whales, either from shore or on a whale watching tour. For a fun day trip take a drive out to "Heavenly Hana" to see waterfalls or through the scenic Maui Upcountry to Haleakala National Park.

Nearby Beaches
Makena is known for its beautiful beaches including the expansive Makena Beach which is comprised of Big Beach and Little Beach. These two beaches are separated by Puu Olai (Earthquake Hill) which was created by volcanic activity in 1790 and now divides the two sections of the coastline. Big Beach has picnic tables and shaded areas that are nice for relaxing, and snorkeling and swimming are excellent here when the water is calm. Offshore you can see Molokini Crater and the islands of Lanai and Kahoolawe. Nearby to Makena Beach are the beaches of Wailea which are equally beautiful and include the lovely Ulua Beach which is fronted by a paved beach side walkway in the heart of the Wailea Resort area. Wailea Beach is the largest, and snorkeling is good at both Keawakapu Beach and Polo Beach.

Restaurants
The Makena region offers an abundance of fabulous dining choices including upscale restaurants at the nearby Shops at Wailea as well as at the posh hotels of Wailea Resort where you can also find live nightly entertainment and seaside dining. Just to the north is the vibrant commercial district of Kihei with many more restaurants and also plenty of food choices at Piilani Shopping Village. A bit farther north is Lahaina town offering a range of cuisines and fun night life scene.

Shopping
More than 70 merchants can be found at the upscale Shops at Wailea offering everything from fine apparel and jewelry to Hawaiian collectibles and art. More fun shopping can be found at the resort hotels of Wailea Resort where there are boutique gift shops to browse. Just to the north in Kihei is a bustling commercial district with shopping centers and a wide variety of stores. Piilani Shopping Village is a convenient place to go for basic goods and services. For more fun shopping head north to Old Lahaina town as well as Kaanapali Resort where there are fun shops to browse along the Kaanapali Beachwalk and at Whalers Village.

 Getting Around
A rental car is recommended when staying in a Makena condo so you can visit the area's beautiful beaches and attractions as well as day trips to Haleakala National Park and "Heavenly Hana" town. Maui's public bus system operates daily and provides service between most major towns of West, South and Central Maui including Haiku, Kula and the Maui Upcountry. Makena is located just south of Wailea and Kihei and approximately 30 minutes from Kahului Airport.

Weather and Ocean Conditions
Makena is known for its abundant sunshine with very little rain making conditions ideal throughout the year. Temperatures are usually between 70 and 80 degrees F., getting a bit cooler during winter and warmer during summer with the trade winds providing a pleasant, cooling effect.
Makena area beaches often have very nice conditions in the morning hours providing excellent snorkeling opportunities. The trade winds may blow a bit stronger in the afternoons. Ocean conditions change from day to day and through the seasons, and intermittent swells sometimes bringing high surf and strong currents. For swimming and other ocean activities it is best to visit lifeguarded beaches and ask the lifeguards about the safest areas for the water sports of your choice.

History
Makena and the West Maui region have an interesting past and there are many historic landmarks throughout the area. Training of US Marines occurred in this region during World War II with amphibious vehicles landing on the beaches. After master planned resort development began to the north in Kaanapali in the 1960s, development in the Makena and Wailea areas followed in the 1970s. Today this area is one of the world's premier vacation destinations.
