Things To Do
Go for a swim at a beautiful beach, play golf or tennis, or see the countryside by horseback or on an ATV excursion. Golfers will appreciate the meticulously groomed Mauna Kea Golf Course where you can sharpen your skills while enjoying views of the Kohala Coast. The course has extensive practice facilities including a driving range and putting green. Take a drive up to Waimea town, Hawi and Kapaau, and historic towns along the scenic Hamakua Coast where you can also stop at the Waipio Valley Overlook as well as the impressive Akaka Falls and Hilo town. A highlight of any Big Island vacation is a visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, see the steaming summit of Kilauea Volcano and walk through an underground lava tube along Crater Rim Drive. Stop in at the Kilauea Visitor Center to learn more about the park.

Nearby Beaches
The picturesque Mauna Kea Beach on Kaunaoa Bay is considered by many to be one of the island's nicest beaches with clear water, bright white sand and a shallow and sandy seafloor that provides great snorkeling. The crescent-shaped beach fronts the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, and snorkeling is best on the side of the bay toward the hotel (the right side). The hotel shines lights on the water at night attracting manta rays which you can view from Manta Ray Point. Hapuna Beach is another lovely white sand beach with clear blue water and nearby amenities making it a great place for a family picnic. Numerous exceptional beaches can be found along the Big Island's western shore from the resort areas of the Kohala Coast to Kealakekua Bay in south Kona.

Restaurants
The Kohala Coast resorts provide plenty of options for fine dining as well as casual fare. For a hearty breakfast or relaxing lunch try the Manta Ray & Pavilion Wine Bar at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel featuring an attractive exhibition kitchen. Their made-to-order waffles and omelets are a great way to start the day dining alongside the sea. The "Number 3" Restaurant at the Mauna Kea Golf Course serves up gourmet pizza and signature Mauna Kea cocktails as well as frosty fruit smoothies. For more dining options explore the other resort areas along the Kohala Coast where you can find exceptional cuisine at oceanside restaurants. More great restaurants can be found in Waimea town and the North Kohala towns of Hawi and Kapaau.

Shopping
You will find some exceptional boutique shopping at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. A fun way to spend a day is to drive around to the different posh resorts along the Kohala Coast enjoying the great beaches and browsing the shops. Drive north up to Waimea town, Hawi and Kapaau for more shopping opportunities, and south to the Kona Coast and historic Kailua village to explore an abundance of interesting shops.

Getting Around
A rental car is recommended when staying in Mauna Kea vacation rentals giving you easy access to explore the Kohala Coast beaches and attractions as well as day trips to historic Kailua village on the Kona Coast, Hilo town and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The island's bus service, called Hele On Bus, is free and stops at various points around the island including transportation between Kona and Hilo every day except Sunday.

Weather and Ocean Conditions
The Kohala and Kona coastlines on the Big Island's western shore, including the Mauna Kea region, are the warmest and driest areas of the island while Hilo on the northeast shore receives more rainfall making this area lush and green. The Big Island is known for its sunny weather which remains relatively stable all year around. The Kohala Coast region sees average daily temperatures around 80 degrees F., perhaps a bit hotter in the summer and a bit cooler in the winter, with nighttime temperatures dropping about 15 degrees. Ocean conditions vary widely at Big Island beaches with many areas exposed to strong currents and potentially dangerous surf, particularly during the winter months. Numerous beaches provide good protection from the open ocean and provide safe areas for swimming and snorkeling. Visitors are urged to only visit lifeguarded beaches for water activities and heed all posted warnings. Check with lifeguards about the safest areas to participate in the activities you choose.
