Things To Do
The village of Volcano is only about one mile from the entrance to Volcanoes National Park providing easy access to one of Hawaii's most exciting visitor destinations. Hike through lava tubes, enjoy stunning summit views atop Kilauea Volcano and along Crater Rim Drive, and check out the great exhibits at the Kilauea Visitor Center as well as the volcano-themed Jaggar Museum. Not far from Volcano Village is the Volcano Winery where you can taste specialty wines made with tropical fruits. A nice day trip from Volcano is a drive into Hilo town to see the impressive Rainbow Falls at Wailuku River Park just above downtown Hilo. Then drive along the Hamakua Coast to visit charming small towns, see the impressive 442-foot Akaka Falls thundering down the mountain, and gaze into the "Valley of the Kings" at Waipio Lookout.

Nearby Beaches
From Volcano Village you can visit the beaches of the Puna district as well as the Hilo region. About 30 miles south of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the famed Punaluu Black Sand Beach which is a great place to see Hawaiian green sea turtles, known as "honu" in Hawaiian. Fun family snorkeling can be found at Onekahakaha Beach Park just east of the Hilo Airport. The beach has a shallow, sandy-bottomed swimming area, tidepools to explore and nice views of Hilo Bay. Lelewi Beach Park is a popular snorkeling beach fronting the Richardson Ocean Center with restrooms, showers and picnic areas.

Restaurants
Volcano Village offers numerous places to eat including Cafe Ohia which is a nice spot to grab breakfast before heading to Volcanoes National Park. You can also get some of their fresh sandwiches to take with you. Kilauea Lodge & Restaurant in Volcano is an upscale restaurant with a great Sunday brunch, and Thai Thai serves up a delicious Thai food. In Volcanoes National Park check out the new restaurant called The Rim at the Volcano House on Crater Rim Drive. For fresh local vegetables, herbs and fruit check out the Farmers Market every Sunday morning in Volcano Village. Along with the fruits and veggies you will find some delectable fresh-baked treats. More dining options and another Farmers Market can be found over in Hilo town.

Shopping
Interesting shops can be found in Volcano Village including volcano-themed gifts, art galleries and more. You will also find some unique Hawaii gifts in the shops at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park including the Kilauea Visitor Center where you can also meet park rangers and learn more about the park through exhibits. Drive over to Hilo town to explore the vibrant waterfront area and visit boutique shops and art galleries.

Getting Around
A rental car is recommended when staying in Volcano vacation rentals so you have easy access to the area's many interesting sights and attractions including the Kilauea Volcano summit area as well as day trips to Hilo, the Hamakua Coast and historic Kailua village on the Kona Coast. Hilo is about 28 miles from Volcano and the drive to Kona is about 97 miles. The island's bus service, called Hele On Bus, is free and stops at various points around the island including transportation between Kona and Hilo every day except Sunday.

Weather and Ocean Conditions
The Volcano region on the Big Island of Hawaii's northeast shore is one of the wetter areas of the island making everything lush and green, with plenty of sunny days to enjoy the beauty. Rain showers often pass quickly revealing sunshine and rainbows, with November through April being the wettest months. Overall the Big Island is known for its sunny weather which remains relatively stable all year around, with more rain during the winter months than the summer months. The Kona and Kohala coastlines on the western shore are the warmest and driest areas. Ocean conditions vary widely at Big Island beaches with many areas exposed to strong currents and potentially dangerous surf, particularly during the winter months. Numerous beaches provide good protection from the open ocean and provide safe areas for swimming and snorkeling. Visitors are urged to only visit lifeguarded beaches for water activities and heed all posted warnings. Check with lifeguards about the safest areas to participate in the activities you choose.

History
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was established in 1916 and many centuries before that was an important native Hawaiian cultural area. During the 19th and 20th centuries the region was visited by and became home to many scientists and researchers. Volcano Village is located just outside the park near the northeast rim of the summit caldera of Kilauea Volcano. An important Hawaiian cultural site within the national park is the Puu Loa petroglyphs where you can walk along a raised boardwalk to view ancient carvings in the rocks.
