Things To Do
Visit Kona Coffee Country to take a tour of a working Kona coffee farm and see how the coffee beans are grown, harvested, milled and roasted. Taste the freshly brewed coffee, meet the farmers. If you are visiting Holualoa June stop in at the Summer Farm Fest & Ukulele Jam, and during November the Holualoa's Coffee & Art Stroll which is part of the Kona Coffee Festival. Activities in this region include snorkeling, sunset sails, sport fishing, and humpback whale watching tours during the winter months. 


Nearby Beaches
For ocean fun head down to Holualoa Bay where you may see some surfers riding the waves at "Lyman's" or "Banyans" surf breaks which are generally for experienced surfers only depending upon ocean conditions. Just south of historic Kailua village on Alii Drive is Laalao Beach which is popular for bodyboarding, swimming and surfing. Further south in Keauhou is Kahaluu Beach which is fun for snorkeling and a great place to see Hawaiian green sea turtles.

Holualoa has nice places to eat including Holuakoa Gardens and Cafe with a wonderful atmosphere as they bake exceptional artisanal breads and serve up hearty meals. Head north to historic Kailua village for many more dining options with something to satisfy any palate.


Shopping
Holualoa's historic buildings house a variety of places to shop including art galleries and stores with unique Hawaii gifts you will find nowhere else. Sip some fresh-roasted Kona coffee on a lanai and browse the wares in the various shops. Holualoa is sometimes referred to as art central with lots of handcrafted work including ceramic sculptures and paintings. The town of Holualoa is located north of the Keauhou resort area and just south of Kailua-Kona town and its historic Kailua Village where you will find more interesting shops to explore.


Getting Around
A rental car is recommended when staying in Holualoa vacation rentals so you can explore Kona coffee country and also have easy access to the region's pristine beaches, posh resort areas and historic Kailua village as well as day trips to the Kohala Coast, Hamakua Coast, Hilo town and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The island's bus service, called Hele On Bus, is free and stops at various points around the island including transportation between Kona and Hilo every day except Sunday.


Weather and Ocean Conditions
Holualoa temperatures in Kona Coffee Country are a bit cooler than sea level towns on the Kona Coast where average daily temperatures are around 80 degrees F., perhaps a bit hotter in the summer and a bit cooler in the winter, with nighttime temperatures dropping about 15 degrees. The Big Island is known for its sunny weather which remains relatively stable all year around, with the Kona and Kohala coastlines on the western shore having the warmest and driest weather while Hilo on the northeast shore receives more rainfall making it lush and green. Ocean conditions vary widely at Big Island beaches with many areas exposed to strong currents and potentially dangerous surf, particularly during the winter months. Numerous beaches provide good protection from the open ocean and provide safe areas for swimming and snorkeling. Visitors are urged to only visit lifeguarded beaches for water activities and heed all posted warnings. Check with lifeguards about the safest areas to participate in the activities you choose.

History
This area has many historic structures such as the restored Living Stones Church which was constructed on the north side of the bay in the 1800s. Important Hawaiian cultural sites in this region include Ahuena Heiau to the north in Kailua-Kona, and Puuhonua O Honaunau to the north overlooking Honaunau Bay where it served as a sacred place of refuge in ancient times. A self-guided tour of the site includes the Palace Grounds, Great Wall and Place of Refuge.
