History
Kihei has a rich history extending to ancient times when this region was the location of small Hawaiian villages and coastal fishponds. When the sugarcane industry began in the 1800s in the Hawaiian Islands the early attempts at growing sugarcane in Kihei failed due to the arid landscape. It wasn't until the 1960s that the population in this area increased when water was piped in from Central Maui. With a reliable water source the region became a prime tourist destination attracting developers.
Today Kihei is a thriving beach town with many residents as well as vacationers. Follow the self-guided walking tour of the Lahaina Historic Trail around Lahaina's front street area to learn about important landmarks like the old jail called Hale Paahao, or "Stuck in Irons House."The walking guide is available at the Lahaina Visitor Center in the Old Lahaina Courthouse near Lahaina Harbor.
