Poipu Beach is also frequented by green sea turtles as well as endangered Hawaiian monk seals which like to rest on the beach. Nearby is Shipwreck Beach which was the site of the cliff jumping scene in "6 Days and 7 Nights"starring Anne Heche and Harrison Ford.

Koloa is a historic town that retains the charm of its past with a vibrant commercial district in the restored structures now housing interesting shops and art galleries. The nearby Poipu Resort area also has a variety of stores including upscale boutique shops at the resort hotels and at the Shops at Kukuiula including fine apparel, beach wear, art, fine jewelry, sporting goods, and the crafts of local artisans. Art lovers will also enjoy visiting Hanapepe town known for its many art galleries and Friday night "Art Night."Drive north from Koloa to Lihue for more shopping including big box stores and shopping malls. More interesting shops to browse can be found in Kapaa on the east shore and Kilauea, Princeville and Hanalei towns on the north shore.
Getting Around
A rental car is recommended when staying in Koloa condos so you can explore the Garden Island's many sites and attractions from the south shore's sunny Poipu Resort area to the west side's Waimea Canyon and the north shore's Hanalei Bay. Kauai's public bus system operates 7 days a week and provides service between most of the island's major communities.
Weather and Ocean Conditions
Koloa is known for its sunny weather throughout the year with temperatures typically in the upper 70s F., getting a bit warmer during the summer and a bit cooler during the winter, with temperatures dropping about five to ten degrees at night. The south shore of Kauai receives relatively little rain while the north shore is wetter, particularly during the winter months.
Ocean conditions on the south shore are typically very calm and great for water activities, with occasional south swells during the summer creating high surf. The north shore is known for intermittent large waves during the winter months which can bring strong surf and currents around the island. Some beaches provide more protection that others during times of high surf. If you want to go in the water then visit lifeguarded beaches and ask water safety personnel about the safest areas for the ocean activities you choose on that particular day.

History
Some of the oldest buildings in the Hawaiian Islands are found in Koloa town which was also the site of Hawaii's first sugarcane plantation. To learn more about the Koloa region's rich past drive the Koloa Heritage Trail, a 10-mile route which includes 14 stops at monuments and cultural sites including the Spouting Horn Blowhole.
