Baby Beach in Lahaina is a small, sandy beach which is usually very calm making it nice for children. Launiupoko State Wayside Park is located south of Lahaina and is a great place for a picnic, with facilities and a grass lawn. North of Lahaina is Wahikulu Wayside Park with a sandy ocean bottom making it good for swimming. Surfers enjoy several good surfing locations near Lahaina Harbor. Drive south of Lahaina to Wailea and Makena for some spectacular white sand beaches, or north to Kapalua and Kapalua for more idyllic Maui beaches. Black Rock at Kaanapali Beach is a great place for snorkeling and scuba diving. D.T. Fleming Beach Park is located next to Kapalua Resort and the Ritz Carlton with a long and sandy beach backed with full facilities and backed by ironwood trees providing shaded areas for relaxing. This is a good beach for bodyboarding and surfing during the winter months.

Lahaina has a wide variety of dining choices from casual fare to fine dining, with something for every palate including Thai, Mexican, Italian, Hawaii Regional Cuisine and more. A nice oceanside setting can be found on Lahaina's Front Street at The Feast at Lele which is also known for its roasted kalua pig as well as its dinner show. A short drive north to the resort areas of Kaanapali and Kapalua provides more interesting shops to browse. Just south of Lahaina is Kihei town with a busy commercial district and a bit farther south is the posh Wailea Resort with shops at the resort hotels and the upscale Shops at Wailea.
Getting Around
We recommend that you rent a car for your Lahaina visit as this will give you easy access to local beaches and attractions as well as day trips to Kaanapali, Wailea, Hana town and Haleakala Volcano. Maui's public bus system offers daily service between most of the island's major towns including the Upcountry region.
Weather and Ocean Conditions
Lahaina is known for its sunny, warm weather with temperatures typically in the mid-70s, a bit cooler at times during the winter and warmer during the summer. Trade winds usually make for comfortable conditions and balmy weather. If you travel to higher elevations like the summit of Haleakala Volcano expect much cooler temperatures.
Lahaina ocean conditions are typically quite calm and great for relaxing days at the beach. However Hawaii ocean conditions are always changing and it's best not to enter the water during times of high surf and strong currents. Visit lifeguarded beaches and check with water safety personnel about safe areas to enjoy the water activities of your choice.

History
The Lahaina region is rich in history from ancient times through the eras of missionaries, whaling and sugarcane. Many Hawaiian royalty lived in Lahaina and it once served as the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
