Expect average daily temperatures around 78 degrees F., a bit colder in the winter and a bit warmer during the summer with a pleasant, cooling effect provided by trade winds. Temperatures at night typically drop about 5 to 15 degrees.
Ocean conditions vary widely at Big Island beaches though the western shore see calm conditions for much of the year with intermittent swells that may bring high surf and strong currents. Some beaches provide more protection from the open ocean than others for snorkeling, kayaking and other water sports. Visit lifeguarded beaches for ocean activities and obey all posted warnings. Ask the lifeguards about the safest areas for the activities you choose.
