The USS Arizona Memorial and Battleship Missouri are the primary Pearl Harbor attractions, and aviation lovers will also want to stop in at the Pacific Aviation Museum.

A popular Honolulu hike is the trek to the top of Diamond Head Crater where you can take in stunning vistas of the southern coast including Waikiki. Other popular Honolulu hikes include the Manoa Trail following a mile-long route through bamboo and tropical terrain to the scenic Manoa Falls cascading about 150 feet into a pool. The Makapuu Lighthouse Trail is another great south shore hike providing breathtaking views of the windward coast.

Golfers will enjoy numerous courses on the south shore including the Ala Wai Golf Course in Waikiki and the Executive Course and Championship Course in Hawaii Kai with sweeping ocean views. Head west from Honolulu to the Makaha Resort Golf Club and Ko Olina Golf Course, two top-rated courses known for their great views as well as exceptional grooming. On the east side the Olomana Golf Links (Obama's favorite) takes in views of the scenic Kooloau Mountains, and the Pali Golf Course is known for its stunning vistas of the windward shore. Nearby Beaches

The south shore is lined with great beaches providing many options for water activities. Along the Waikiki shoreline you will find numerous vendors offering rentals for a variety of water sports including surfing and stand up paddle boarding. Take a guided excursion on an ocean kayak or outrigger canoe, or take a surfing lesson to benefit from local knowledge. One of Hawaii's most popular snorkeling spots is Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve located just east of Waikiki in a submerged volcanic crater. A visit to the Preserve's Marine Education Center will help you learn more about the many interesting fish and other marine life you will see in the bay. Farther east is Sandy Beach Park and Makapuu Beach Park. Just west of Waikiki is the 76-acre Ala Moana Beach Park with shaded areas, grass lawns and picnic facilities as well as a lifeguard station.

For more great beaches take a drive up the windward (eastern) shore to the Waimanalo Beach stretching for miles with the backdrop of the furrowed and verdant Koolau mountain range. A bit farther north is Kailua Bay, great for water activities with vendors along the shore renting equipment, and the picturesque Lanikai Beach known for its clear blue water, powdery white sand and scenic views with the Mokulua Islands offshore. Continue on to the north shore to see the renowned surfing beaches of Sunset Beach, Banzai Pipeline and Waimea Bay where world class surfing competitions are held every winter.

Restaurants

From downtown Honolulu to the Waikiki waterfront there are hundreds of dining choices on the south shore including the culinary creations of numerous world-class chefs who take advantage of the fresh local fish as well as the produce grown in the Islands. The Royal Hawaiian Center in Waikiki has more than 100 merchants while the Waikiki Beach Walk has more than 50, and both of these venues frequently feature live entertainment as well as Hawaiian cultural activities including hula, lei making and ukulele. Weather and Ocean Conditions

Honolulu weather is pleasant throughout the year with temperatures ranging from about 70 to 85 degrees F., a bit cooler in winter and a bit warmer during summer with Hawaii's trade winds providing a pleasant, cooling effect. Rain and wind conditions vary in different areas throughout Oahu with the south and west shores a bit dryer and warmer than the north and eastern shores. Winter months typically see more rain than summer though the south shore sees very little rain overall. Rain showers are typically brief and light with plenty of sunshine even on the rainier days. Trade winds are usually calmest in the mornings so it's a good time for snorkeling and other beach activities.

Ocean conditions vary each day and through the seasons with many days of fairly calm water along the southern shore. During the summer intermittent south swells can bring high surf and strong currents while winter brings north swells that bring high surf to north facing shores. Some beaches provide more protection from the open ocean than others, and if the waves are too big at one beach you may be able to find a more sheltered beach where it is safer to go in the ocean. For swimming and other ocean activities visit Oahu's lifeguarded beaches, obey all posted warnings and ask the lifeguards about the conditions on that day for the water sports you choose.

History
