Things To Do

The Waikoloa region offers many activities and adventures from championship golf courses to ocean activities, hiking, horseback riding and ATV tours. A fun day trip is a drive along the Hamakua Coast to see Akaka Falls and Hilo town as well as a visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see the steaming summit of Kilauea Volcano. Another fun day trip is a drive south along the Kona Coast to Historic Kailua Village, Kealakekua Bay and Kona Coffee Country where you can meet the coffee farmers and learn how the coffee beans are grown and processed. After a day of adventure pamper yourself with a massage and other luxurious spa treatments.

Nearby Beaches

There are several spectacular beaches in this region including Holoholokai Beach which is fun for tidepool exploring and snorkeling. From this beach you can also hike to see petroglyph rock carvings at the Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve. Snorkeling and ocean kayaking are good at Anaehoomalu Bay which enjoys the protection of a coral reef offshore. Two more exceptional beaches in this area are Hapuna Beach and Kaunaoa Beach (Mauna Kea Beach) which both offer white sand and crystal blue waters. To the south are more great beaches including Kealakekua Bay where spinner dolphins are often seen.

Exceptional dining is found in this upscale region including the popular Waikoloa Bar & Grill at the Kings'Shops. This is also the site of Merriman's Mediterranean Cafe which emphasizes locally-grown ingredients. Their family-friendly menu includes pasta, pizza, sandwiches, burgers, fish tacos and artisan cocktails with outdoor patio seating. More fun shopping can be found in the various resort areas along the Kohala Coast and Kona Coast as well as to the north in Waimea town, Hawi and Kapaau.

Getting Around

Renting a car is recommended when staying in a Waikoloa condo so you can explore nearby beaches and attractions along the Kohala Coast as well as day trips to Kailua-Kona, Volcanoes National Park and Hilo town. Most of the island's major communities can also be reached on the island's bus service called Hele On Bus, which is free and travels between Kona and Hilo daily except Sunday. The Kona International Airport is about 24 miles south of Waikoloa.

Weather and Ocean Conditions

Waikoloa temperatures are typically between 75 and 80 degrees F., often a bit warmer in the summer and a bit cooler in the winter, with nighttime temperatures dropping about 5 to 15 degrees. This region of the Kohala Coast is known for its beautiful, sunny weather and very little rain. The Kohala Coast as well as the Kona Coast on the Big Island's western shore are the warmest and driest areas of the island while Hilo on the northeast shore receives more rainfall.

Ocean conditions vary widely at Big Island beaches though the western shoreline has very calm water for much of the year. Intermittent swells can bring high surf and strong currents, and some beaches provide more protection from the open than others. For swimming and other ocean activities it is best to visit lifeguarded beaches, obey posted warnings and ask lifeguards about the safest areas for the water activities you choose.
