Weather and Ocean Conditions
Maui's west and south shores, including Wailea, are known for their year-round great weather with lots of sunshine, moderate rain and comfortable temperatures that are typically between 70 and 80 degrees F. Winter temperatures may dip into the 60s and summer temperatures may rise into the 90s on the hottest of days. Trade winds help to keep the summer days cool. Wailea area beaches are typically very calm with glassy conditions in the morning hours. During the midday and afternoons the trade winds tend to blow a bit stronger. Like all Hawaii beaches, conditions can change and you should always use caution before entering the ocean. Inexperienced swimmers are advised to enjoy ocean activities at lifeguarded beaches and check with lifeguards before going in the water to learn about safe areas and also areas to avoid on any particular day.

The name Wailea means "Waters of Lea" and refers to the Hawaiian goddess of canoe makers Lea who was said to have transformed into a bird and flown over this shoreline. The Wailea region was a training area for Marines during World War II and what is now known as Ulua beach was then used for amphibious landing training. Alexander & Baldwin, one of "Big Five" sugar companies, began developing Wailea as an integrated residential resort community in 1971. Today Wailea Resort includes exquisite condominiums and resort hotels, prestigious residential neighborhoods, shopping centers, championship golf courses and an award-winning tennis center all near a string of immaculate beaches.
